Latonya Reeves running against Ilhan Omar for Congress

Latonya Reeves announced that she is running against Ilhan Omar for the Democratic nomination for Fifth Congressional District seat.

Omar has also been involved in a number of controversies. Omar supported defunding the police. She was accused of using antisemitic tropes, something she later apologized for.  In 2020, she married Tim Mynett, owner of the E Street Group. Her campaign paid the E Street Group $2.78 million in 2019 and 2020 to help with her reelection, including payments to the company after they were married. As the wife of the owner, payments directly benefitted her. Omar also was censured in 2025 and lost two committee seats over comments about Charlie Kirk.

Reeves has been involved in public safety. She has been a career probation officer in the Adult Probation Supervision Services Division at Community Corrections and Rehabilitation in Hennepin County. She is Chair of the Minneapolis Community Commission on Police Oversight. She was appointed in 2023 to serve on the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission. She is the incoming president for 2026 of the Minnesota Corrections Association. She served as chair of the Minnesota Civilian Public Safety Commission. She also served on the Justice Involved Girls State Task Force. She served as the Justice Co-Chair for the Minneapolis NAACP.

Minneapolis resident Latonya Reeves launched her campaign for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District Sunday night. She is facing off against incumbent Ilhan Omar.
